If you have ever received a Neiman Marcus holiday catalog in the mail, chances are you are familiar with the colorful and original touches of MacKenzie-Childs, the furniture, ceramics and jewelry line founded by artists Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs. The duo have earned quite a following for their often whimsical and enchanting designs, and it comes as little surprise to find that many of these characteristics can be found in the MacKenzie-Childs Estate, which recently hit the market for $1.1 million.
Located along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail in Ledyard, New York, the MacKenzie-Childs Estate is set on a whopping 42-acres and includes a 4,280-square foot main house, a 2,300-square foot carriage home and a small cottage that has been converted into, surprise, an artist’s retreat. Entering the seven-bedroom chateau, originally constructed in 1790, is almost like stepping inside a scene from Alice in Wonderland. Each room employs the MacKenzie-Childs’ vibrant touch – from a paper-doll-lined ceiling in one bathroom to majestic dining room decked out in black and white tiles from top to bottom to the warmth and brightness of the pastel-colored kitchen – with many of the couple’s hand-crafted creations scattered throughout. The original artwork and pottery found within the home, according to Victoria MacKenzie-Childs herself, “can optionally be included in the sale negotiation.”
Adding to the aesthetic uniqueness of the home is the fact that the MacKenzie-Childs Estate is versatile enough to present plenty of possible uses for the new homeowner. Besides the sheer acreage included, much of the property has the potential to be zoned for either residential or commercial applications, meaning beyond being one of the more distinctive homes in the upstate New York region, it could be used for any number functions (bed & breakfast, anyone?). And as an added bonus, as our good friends over at Curbed pointed out, whoever ends up purchasing the MacKenzie-Childs Estate will receive an invitation to wine and dine with the artists themselves as guests aboard Victoria and Richard’s ‘Yankee’ ferry.
The listing is presented by Michael DeRosa of Select Sotheby’s.
