There are lots of games that Doc Rivers can miss and not feel badly.
As long as there are basketballs bouncing in the NBA, he can find a job as one of the game’s best coaches.
But what about watching his son Austin try to win another state championship at Winter Park?
Going to see his daughter Callie play volleyball in Gainesville for the Gators?
Catching a movie and dinner with his wife Kris at Winter Park Village, so close, as he likes to say, “to the kitty litter box.” Doc never strays far from home when he goes out.

That’s why I think he checks out this NBA season, leaves the Boston Celtics, and comes back the following year, or maybe even the next.
It’s a nice blow to take from all the stress and madness and grind of another NBA season. Doc has the ring and the resume to get a job anytime he wants. But he can’t go back in time and recapture lost family time.
I strongly feel that he will make the call this week to say he is stepping down as coach of the Celtics. He is expected tomake a decision within days.
It’s a good time for Doc to step away. Rasheed Wallace has retired. Ray Allen may not come back. An old team is getting older. No one is going to rip Doc for coming home to his family.
PS to Doc: Another family beckons, buddy. Remember your coed flag football team? We’re still around, grinding it out every Monday. Florida Citrus Sports Executive Director Steve Hogan still has issues at quarterback, but we still love him. We rolled this week, 27-0. Good times, good laughs, good people.
We’d love to have you back because it would bump up the average age considerably, since you would join Hogan and yours truly as teammates eligible for AARP benefits. We’d love the company. And we can always get dinner at 4:30 at Morrisons before the game to take advantage of those senior-citizen specials.
Before you won a championship with the Celtics, you won one with us in the spring of 20005.
Can you get a repeat if you take a couple of years off?
Let’s roll, Doc.
