It’s an estate fit for a queen, or an heiress, and now it is being passed along to a lucky new owner.
The late philanthropist and New York socialite Brooke Astor’s sprawling home Holly Hill in Westchester County is under contract and set to be sold after three years on the market, according to the New York Daily News.
Built in 1927 on nearly 65 acres, the estate was first listed on the Briarcliff Manor real estate market for $12.9 million, but reportedly sold for less than $7.5 million. A source told the Daily News that the final sale price was “lower, but not significantly lower.”
The “leading lady of New York” led a stately and generous life, overseeing donations from her third husband, Vincent Astor, and contributing significant donations to New York libraries, museums, clinics and youth centers. Unfortunately, in her final years, her only son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of grand larceny for defrauding Astor.
Among claims of fraud and embezzlement, Marshall was also accused mistreating his mother. He was sentenced to a year in prison, but is fighting the conviction and is out on bail, awaiting the appeal process. Although Marshall is one of the main beneficiaries of Astor’s will, the profit from the property sale will not go to him until the case is settled.
Although Astor also owned a penthouse in Manhattan, which recently sold, the sprawling Holly Hill estate was her favorite home and where she spent her final days.
Nestled between trees with views of the Hudson River, the stone mansion spans more than 10,000 square feet with formal rooms, grand windows and fireplaces. The 10-bedroom, 10-bath home has a spiral staircase, indoor pool, as well as several guest cottages and a carriage house as well as indoor and outdoor pool.
Holly HIll is situated in Briarcliff Manor, one of the wealthiest enclaves of high-end Westchester County. Home to Martha Stewart, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Westchester County home values are $516,700.
