Teens charged in death of real estate agent

ackson County prosecutors charged two Northland teens Thursday in the shooting and stabbing death of a well-known real estate agent in his Northeast area mansion.
Prosecutors allege that one of the teens, Ali K. Cubba, 17, met Yuri Ives, 48, through a personal ad that Ives placed on Craigslist.
Cubba allegedly enlisted the help of Zachary Chase Kimbrell, 18, to drive him to Ives’ home in the 500 block of Gladstone Boulevard so they could rob him Monday night.
But the robbery apparently went wrong, police said. Ives struggled with his attacker, suffered several gunshot wounds and cuts and died on his floor. He may have been shot with his own gun, police said. His gun, cell phone and wallet were missing.
Police recovered Ives’ .44-caliber revolver in Cubba’s bedroom in the 7200 block of North Jefferson Court, according to court records.
Prosecutors charged Cubba and Kimbrell each with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action.
Cubba declined to talk to police. He had a cut on his right hand, court records said.
According to court records:
Kimbrell told police he drove Cubba to Ives’ home and stayed in the vehicle while Cubba went inside.
Cubba allegedly sent text messages to Kimbrell saying that Ives had an alarm and that Kimbrell should cover the license plate on the getaway vehicle. Cubba allegedly returned to the vehicle “covered in blood and carrying a gun,” saying he cut his hand while stabbing Ives. The two drove to Kimbrell’s home to clean up. Cubba later burned his clothing.
Ives was well-known and liked in the Northeast area, where he convinced many friends and families to move into historic neighborhoods. He was likened to a “pied piper” by one friend.
Ives had lived in the old Northeast since the mid-1990s and had converted a former eight-unit apartment building into a grand mansion where he lived with his partner and two teenage sons. The partner was out of the country and his sons were not home when he was killed.
