Roger Revelle La Jolla Beachfront Estate Returns to the Market

Here's a convenient truth: Dr. Roger Revelle's La Jolla oceanfront home is listed for sale for the first time in 80 years. Revelle, who warned us about global warming way back in 1957, was the mentor to and inspiration for former Vice President Al Gore's long-time campaign to cut down on CO2 emissions.

The 4,165-square-foot home, listed at $14 million, was originally built in 1922 by Rex Clark and Grace Scripps Clark as their summer house. Grace was the daughter of James Edmund Scripps, founder of the Detroit Evening News and one of the key newspapers in the Scripps newspaper chain. In 1947, the home passed to the Clarks' daughter and her husband, the renowned scientist and scholar, Roger Revelle. Because of Revelle's prominence, the home was the venue for frequent entertaining of guests including Eleanor Roosevelt, Jonas Salk and many Nobel laureates from around the world. Revelle was also credited with bringing world-class scientists to UCSD and, as a result of that, making San Diego the home to so many science and research laboratories.

The 5-bedroom estate, which sits on an 18,900-square-foot walled lot, has stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the Whispering Sands Beach. There is a lush garden, fishpond and pool. The property has a 350-square-foot lanai, a detached one-bedroom guesthouse and a large living room with a fireplace, a formal dining room, breakfast room and sun room/office. The main house and guest house border 115 feet of sandy beach.

Dr. Revelle won numerous awards for his scientific research, including a presidential appointment by President John F. Kennedy Jr. and the National Medal of Science from President George W. Bush. Gore became enamored of his work in the 1960s and took on the challenge of climate change as his personal mission. Revelle died in 1991.

La Jolla Beachfront Estate Returns to the Market

The La Jolla, Calif., estate of the late scientist Roger Revelle's family has come back on the market for $12.5 million. It originally listed last year for $14 million, then was taken off the home several months ago for remodeling.

Dr. Revelle, who died in 1991, was among the earliest to study global warming and one of the founders of the University of California, San Diego. The property has been in the Revelle family since 1920; the house was built in 1922. It has 115 feet of beachfront and a 4,100-square-foot, five-bedroom, five-bathroom house, as well as a guest house. There's also a fish pond and a swimming pool.

Dr. Revelle's widow died in 2009. The home is owned by their four grown children. Linda Marrone of Coldwell Banker Previews in La Jolla has the listing.

Jennifer Aniston & Justin Theroux’s Cozy Rental House

by HOOKEDONHOUSES on SEPTEMBER 8, 2011

Remember when Jennifer Aniston sold her 10,000 square-foot Mid-Century Modern in Beverly Hills for $38 million earlier this year, saying she wanted to live in something cozier? Looks like she meant it.

First she bought two apartments in NYC to convert into a 2,700 square-foot duplex. Then she fell in love with actor Justin Theroux, and the couple rented this 2-bedroom house in the Hollywood Hills. I love that she’s living in 1,700 square feet when she could afford 17,000.

Any fans of the NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation” out there? It took me a while to warm up to the show, but now I never miss an episode. Justin Theroux had a funny role as Amy Pohler’s too-good-to-be-true love interest in the second season.

He was so clean-cut and businesslike on that show that I didn’t realize that was the guy she was dating at first. I was all, like, “Jen! Why didn’t you tell me he was on Parks & Rec? I thought you were dating some random bearded dude on a motorcycle!” When he shaved his beard recently, I finally recognized him.

They didn’t want to buy a place right away, Us Weekly reports, so they’re renting this fully-furnished, $3 million house for (gulp) $17,500 a month. Apparently they got a deal–it used to be $20 grand. Once again, I note how glad I am to live in one of the fly-over states where you could lease a lovely house like this for under $2,000.

The house is reportedly owned by a film location scout, which may be why it’s so easy to imagine a movie being filmed here. A rom-com, most likely.

The kitchen has kind of an odd, triangular shape to it.

Those top shelves look way high. I’d never be able to reach them!

The guest bedroom:

Love all the vaulted ceilings in the house, and the french doors in the master bedroom:

There’s a garage on the property that was converted into additional living space, too:

Like it? You can read more about the house and see the rest of the photos at Realtor.com. Photos of Jen’s just-sold mansion here.

Meg Ryan’s Spanish-Style Home in Bel Air

by HOOKEDONHOUSES on MARCH 30, 2010

Meg Ryan photo

Meg Ryan’s Spanish-style mansion in Bel Air, California, is on the market for $14.2 million. It has 6 bedrooms, 7 baths, and over 6,800 square feet. It sits on nearly three-quarters of an acre and boasts high-profile neighbors like Tom Ford nearby (whose chic London townhouse I showed you here).

Ryan purchased the house in 2000 for around $8.5 million.

I’d love to get a better look at this kitchen. She seems to have a lot of framed artwork in there.

This house reminds me of Diane Keaton’s Spanish Colonial I showed you here, but Keaton’s is more colorful. You can find more photos and information about Ryan’s house at The Real Estalker.

I think I associate Meg Ryan with interesting houses because of the movies she’s been in. For example, there was Sleepless in Seattle, where she had that adorable place with pink kitchen cabinets and vintage decor:

Her much-loved brownstone in You’ve Got Mail:

And the red-brick house she had in the movie I wrote about yesterday, The Women:

I even liked her apartment in When Harry Met Sally. Remember that one? Do you have a favorite “Meg Ryan house’?
